The Smith & Wesson M&P (Military & Police) has become a very popular firearm for both law enforcement and civilians alike. S&W was one of the first manufacturers to introduce the interchangeable back straps on the grip frame.
The S&W M&P is a polymer framed handgun that features a blackened stainless steel slide. It is also available in a compact model. They also offer this same gun in a few different calibers, 9mm, .357 SIG, 45 ACP. You can also get these with the “magazine disconnect”, this is personal preference and if you are LEO, it may be required by your department. It is simply that if the magazine is removed from the gun, the gun will NOT fire. Even if there is a live round in the chamber, if the magazine is removed the gun is useless. The thinking here is if you are in a fight for your gun, you can simply drop the mag and it removes the possibility of being shot with your own gun. Unless the bad guy also pick up your mag too. Some people like this idea, others hate it. You will need to decide for your self which works best for you. If you buy a M&P that has this feature and you decide down the road that you do not like it, with a few minutes work, that feature can be removed to make the handgun capable of firing with the magazine out of the gun.
Having the mag disconnect also posses another issue if you use the firearm to compete in any IDPA or similar competition.
